Alife Presents: Clayton Patterson L.E.S. Captured

A small storefront gallery On Rivington Street, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, called Alife Presents displays a portrait gallery, on a plasma screen, of what the L.E.S. used to be like. There are also more photos inside, all of which are captured by Mr. Patterson. Patterson consideres these photos historical documents because the L.E.S. has changed so drastically.

“I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was capturing the last of the wild, free, outlaw, utopian, visionary spirit of the Lower East Side,”

Over the years, Patterson has collected an estimated hundreds of thousands of photographs, & over 300 audiotaped interviews, not to mention a collection of Lower East Side ephemera, including graffiti stickers, books, & tattoo art.
